John Abbott College Food Pantry Receives Upgrades to Better Serve Students

The John Abbott College Food Pantry has supported students facing food insecurity for more than a decade. It is seeing demand rise at an unprecedented pace. Between the Fall 2023 and the Fall 2025 semesters, the need for pantry services and financial aid have increased by nearly 40 per cent – this trend is expected to grow every semester.

As student demand continues to rise, reorganizing and upgrading the pantry’s shelving became essential. With financial support from the John Abbott College Foundation, the pantry replaced outdated, deteriorating shelves, with new industrial-grade units. The improvements allow for better organization, quick access to items, and additional space to accommodate donations of all kinds.

Donations to the pantry come from employees, students, community members, and local grocery stores, including a monthly truckload delivery from Provigo Le Marché Kirkland Jean Paquette

The improvements are not over! A fresh coat of paint will help brighten the pantry and electrical work is expected which will allow for the fridge and freezer to be relocated. A new workspace and sorting station will also be built and installed. Together, these renovations will make grocery access and pick-up easier and more efficient for students in need.
